Frank E. Hall died on the morning of Thursday, June 23, 2022 in his home in Millington, Michigan.
Frank was born on December 19, 1939 in what many would consider a "shotgun shack" with no electricity or indoor plumbing on the side of a mountain in eastern Kentucky. He was the youngest child of Charlie and Annie Hall, who taught him devotion to family and love can overcome life's greatest challenges.
His greatest pride was his 62 year marriage to Carol Jeanne Gibson. Theirs is a love of a Hallmark movie - a misguided wild boy wins the love of a beautiful blue-eyed majorette who inspired him to find peace and happiness. Together they built a home, raised four boys, and taught them and their many children the value of hard work, honor and family.
As they began their family, Frank went to college, earning a bachelors and master's degree to become a teacher. He taught for over 30 years - first in Kentucky, then in Michigan at Kearsley Schools from 1969-1991. He was a master teacher who was often given the most difficult students, because the administration knew he had an almost magical way of helping a troubled student become a success.
In addition to teaching in the classroom, he passed the practical lessons from his depression-era upbringing to his family. These many lessons included what crops grow well with what, how and when to plant them, the best way to tend an apple tree, and how to make anyone feel welcome in your home with a belly full of homemade fudge and a kind smile. He was endeared to his grandchildren not only for his kindness but also his love of sweets. Children would show up to the house then were encouraged to go on a treasure hunt for chocolates, stashed away in unexpected places.
He is famous in the family as the story-teller of his generation. He loved to share the tales of how the family back in the mountains overcame hardship through wit and ingenuity. Those closest to him heard his tales hundreds of times, but each story always ended with a wink and a cautionary phrase: "give or take a lie or two."
Frank also took his hobbies extremely seriously; he loved apple trees, so naturally he planted an orchard of 500 on his property, supplying four generations with homemade cider and apple pies. Picking the apples every fall became an annual neighborhood event, wherein he would take photographs with his large collection of cameras.
His laughter will never stop ringing in the hearts of those who knew him. You never really die when you give so much of yourself to the people you love.
His spirit will continue through his children: Frank, John, Joe and Chris - the boys he was so proud of.
Frank and Carol's oldest son, Franklin is a combat veteran of the Gulf War, is a plant manager for DTE and retired U.S. Army Ranger. He lives with his wife Carla in southern Ohio. Frank's children are Kristen, Zachary, Carrie and Evann. His grandchildren are Layne, Layla, Jamison and Jolie.
Frank and Carol's "number two" son, John, a combat veteran in Iraq, is a retired English and theater teacher, now a Colonel on the faculty of the U.S. Army War College, at Carlisle Barracks, PA. He and his wife Laura have two daughters, Savannah Halleaux and Samantha Hall, as well as two grandsons, Tim and Jeremy Halleaux.
Frank and Carol's third son, Joe, is a combat veteran in Somalia, is retired after 25 years on the Flint Police Department and now is a police officer at Mott Community College. He lives with his partner Kim in Flushing. Joe has five children: Jacob, Rylie, Kaleb, Rowan, Sebastian. He has one grandchild, Willie Jay.
Frank and Carol's baby boy Christopher Hall, D.O., is a combat veteran from Afghanistan, now an emergency room physician. He is married to Tomoko and has two daughters, Samantha and Susannah.
Frank is reunited with his parents and three siblings - Bobbie Hall, Georgia Ann Johnson, and Charles (Tooter) Hall – and figures from his many legendary family stories.
And that was Frank Hall, give or take a lie or two.
