ANNA ISABELL (McGARVEY) VAN WULFEN, age 91 of Otisville, Michigan-formerly of Atlanta, Michigan passed on September 23, 2016, surrounded by her children, who loved her dearly. Isabell was born on November 26, 1924, in North Bend, Ohio to Ernest and Anna (Chase) McGarvey. She grew up in Farmington, Michigan, graduating from Walled Lake High School, and attending Wayne State University. On April 19, 1945, she enlisted in the U.S. Army as a surgical technician, during WWII, where she served until February 1, 1946, when she was honorably discharged at Camp Beale California. Isabell married Frank R. Van Wulfen Sr. on January 1, 1946, after his return from military service. They raised six children in Allen Park, Michigan for 31 years, where they encouraged them in all of their activities and scholastic endeavors. In 1978 as a supervisor of legal services, Isabell retired from the General Motors legal department in Detroit, Michigan. During her retirement she was a voracious reader, and traveled the U.S., Canada, and parts of Europe. She enjoyed the theater-especially Shakespearean plays. Isabell and Frank (Rut) loved having family and friends at their home at Avery Lake (Atlanta, Michigan) and at their home on the Island in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Isabell was a member of the Allen Park Presbyterian Church for 67 years; the Democratic Party for 70 years; the Girl Scouts for 60 years; the Boy Scouts for 56 years; the Atlanta VFW for 20 Years; the Atlanta Michigan Senior Citizens for 20 years; a lifetime member of the Ladies Elks Lodge in New Smyrna Beach; the New Smyrna Beach Garden Club for 16 years; and the AFSCME Union for 5 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son (Frank R. Van Wulfen Jr.), grandson (Douglas Plivelich), two great grandchildren (Sweet Baby and Copper Cottrell), two brothers (Ernest and Mark McGarvey), and three step sisters (Martha and Alice McMurdie and Mary Asher). Isabell is survived by her daughters- Elsie (Tom) Plivelich, Linda Van Wulfen, Laura (David) Glynn; sons Jerry (Cathy) Van Wulfen, Reg (Lynn) Van Wulfen; daughter in-law Marianne Van Wulfen; 11 grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; sister Hannah Bliss; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial will be held at the Mumford- Hudson Funeral Home on Thursday, September 29, 2016, at 11 AM with Rev. Ann Norton presiding. Burial will be at White Chapel in Troy, Michigan. Visitation is at the Mumford-Hudson Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 28, 2016, from 3:00 PM -8:00 PM, In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Isabell's name to the Wounded Warriors Project or the St. Jude's Children Research Hospital.
